Below is my hair regimen as of December 2017. New products are used every now and then.
Wash Day Weekly
Remove Shed Hair and Pre-poo
Before washing my hair, I apply a pre-poo of coconut oil or a hot oil treatment. I like to do hot oil treatments with grapeseed oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, or Queen Helene Cholesterol Oil. While applying the pre-poo, I gently smooth the hair to remove loose shed hair and section into quadrants with my fingers. Pre-pooing aids in minimizing hygral fatigue and matting during the wash process. Most of the time, I leave the oil in overnight with my hair wrapped in a plastic cap. If my hair is really dry, I’ll use a moisturizing conditioner after pre-pooing overnight and 30 minutes before proceeding to the wash process.
I personally suffer from contact seborrheic dermatitis, so that limits the shampoos that I can use directly on my scalp. The shampoo Nizoral AD Anti‑Dandruff Shampoo is the only shampoo that doesn’t irritate my scalp and causes dandruff.
Sulfate-free shampoos (on my hair) are used throughout the month and then a clarifying and chelating shampoo once a month to remove product and hard water build-up. The tgin Moisture Rich Sulfate Free Shampoo is my favorite sulfate-free shampoo and the Jane Carter Healthy Hair Detox Shampoo is my favorite clarifying and chelating shampoo. I co-wash currently sparingly, but I do plan to incorporate it more.
Now that my hair is longer, I use a moisturizing deep conditioner every week. A few of my favorites include tgin Honey Miracle Hair Mask and the Queen Helene Cholesterol Hair Conditioning Cream. The deep conditioner is applied on my hair from root to tip and heavily concentrating the product on the ends. I leave it on my hair covered with a shower cap without heat for an hour or with a hooded dryer for 20-30 minutes. See how I deep condition my hair here. I find that adding a very thin layer of a light oil (grapeseed or Jane Carter Healthy Hair Complex 4 Oil) to wet hair under the deep conditioner helps to replenish the cuticle layer. If I do not have time to deep conditioner, I will use a rinse out deep conditioner like tgin Triple Moisture Replenishing Conditioner or Herbal Essences Hello Hydration.
After rinsing out the deep conditioner with warm water, I follow up with cool water to smooth the hair strands. Then, I’ll use a moisturizing leave-in conditioner like the Jane Carter Curls to Go Un-Tangle Me and proceed with detangling with a seamless comb. Each quadrant is detangled individually while the other quadrants are covered with a plastic cap to keep them wet for easy detangling. My favorite wide-tooth seamless comb is the Magic Star Jumbo Rake and favorite medium-tooth comb is the HS7370 Contour Comb. Both combs are made by Hercules Sägemann.
I use a leave-in conditioner or cream to moisturize. It is done in sections from root to tip concentrating more product on the tips. At night, I usually pineapple my hair with a satin scarf. I also sleep on a satin pillow case. In the morning, I mist my hair lightly with water and fluff where needed.

My hair is less rough, resilient, and retains more moisture when I incorporate hot oil treatments. This is done 1-2 times a month. To keep my hair strengthened, I apply an intense protein treatment like ApHogee 2 Step or ORS Hair Mayonnaise every 12 weeks. I always follow intense protein treatments with a moisturizing deep conditioner. If I need a little added strength between that time, I’ll use a light protein like ORS Replenishing Conditioner or Giovanni Smooth As Silk Xtreme Protein Hair Infusion. Trims are done by me once every 2-3 months. I do utilize the search and destroy method every wash day if needed.
