Review: Huetiful™ Salon
I really wanted to change up my look by straightening my hair. But I didn’t want to go through the hours it takes for me to flat iron my hair to only end up with sub par results. So, I decided to make an appointment with Huetiful Salon here in Chicago, Illinois.
To book an appointment, you have to visit their website to choose the service and the stylist that you want. I chose the 90 Minute Blowout/Silk Press for $60. There is an additional charge for the same service if you have bra strap length hair or waist length hair for $80 and $95 respectively. The site states that the additional fee is due to the extended time it takes to style and steam longer or more dense hair. I did not know the additional pricing verbatim before going to the salon and I will explain why this is relevant later.
My appointment was booked with stylist Shawanna Robinson for 7 am on Saturday, April 18th. I arrived at my appointment on time and was greeted by the receptionist whom gave me a questionnaire about my hair regimen and issues. My stylist Shawanna escorted me to her styling area. She began with a consultation that was brief but insightful. Next was shampooing. A sulfate-free shampoo was applied and used to detangle my hair. This is the part that I didn’t like that much. It seemed like the shampoo didn’t provide enough slip and the detangling was a bit rough and long even though I had detangled my hair the day before. However, it seemed like I lost minimal to no hair during the process.
After shampooing for about 15-20 minutes, she proceeded with the conditioning treatment and steamer. Upon putting me under the steamer, Shawanna asked if I wanted anything to drink like coffee, water or juice. I didn’t accept, but I thought it was a nice gesture considering that salons I’ve visited in the past never offered any refreshments. The steam treatment lasted for 20 minutes.
Before the steam treatment, Shawanna explained the difference between moisture and hydration. I was listening, but I didn’t fully understand until after the steam treatment and my hair had shrunken to about 80% of it’s length. It normally shrinks to about 50% of its length during deep conditioning. My hair was incredibly soft! I kind of had an ah ha moment. Deep conditioners can provide the hair with only so much water. This is why steamers are beneficial. They infuse the hair with pure water to hydrate while the deep conditioner smooths the cuticle and seals the water in. I will definitely be investing in an at-home steamer soon.
She then began to blow-dry my hair after applying a heat protectant. The blow-drying was a bit rough in my opinion, but I again lost minimal hair. The flat iron that she used was the Babyliss® Titanium Flat Iron which is one of the best flat irons on the market. I was extremely surprised at how long my hair was post flat ironing which is only two years of growth. She proceeded to trim and style my hair in curls with the flat iron. My hair came out gorgeous! I was very pleased with the results, but not the news that came after.
Remember earlier I stated that I booked an appointment for the 90 Minute Blowout/Silk Press for $60. The styling actually took 2 hours to complete and I was charged for bra strap length hair. My total was $85, which is $5 more than what is stated on their website. The receipt was suppose to have been emailed to me but I never received it. Though I was incredibly happy with my service, I felt bamboozled upon leaving the salon. My hair was definitely longer than I thought, but in no way was it bra strap length, especially considering that I had bra-strap length hair prior to big chopping. I would say my hair is definitely between shoulder and arm pit length. Overall, it was a great experience. My rating is a 3.5 out of 5 and I will visit again. I will just make sure that I am more stern about last minute changes. To learn more about my experience, view the video below.
